Ford’s goal for 1966 was 700,000 Mustangs to built in an extended model year. A new deluxe interior featuring the galloping pony seat inserts served to continue its popularity. Instead of a separate luxury model, Ford decided to offer a set of luxury options. These options were given the name ‘Interior Decor Group’. Most noticeable of these features was the galloping pony inserts on the seats. For this reason, the Interior Decor Group is often referred to as the ‘Pony’ interior. These special interiors were also known as Deluxe or Luxury interiors. Cars with the ‘Pony’ interior trim were sometimes called ‘Ponycars’ or ‘Pony Mustangs’. In 1966 Ford offered many styling ‘refinements’. The options/accessories in the 1966 Mustang totalled over 70 compared to 50 in 1964.
Our Classic “Custom” features the sought-after ‘Pony’ interior trim along with American Racers magnesium 5 spoke rims, Metallic Black body colour and Orange body, bonnet and side stripes.
Features
The high performance 289 cubic inch V8 engine and surrounding bay has been faithfully replicated and looks just as good as the original.
The model also features a removable air filter cover with the original 289ci and Autolite stickers adorning it. This can be found in the boot of the model.
The ‘Pony’ interior shows off the embossed galloping pony seat inserts, along with the highly detailed dash and five dial instrument cluster.
The deluxe steering wheel is studded with eighteen, bright recessed dots and features simulated brushed metal spokes, pierced with 12 holes.
The ‘Pony’ seats feature the embossed galloping pony inserts front and rear. Another feature was colour keyed seat belts that have a push button release.
The five dial instrument cluster received an all-new bezel and was equipped with gauges rather than warning lights. Simulated walnut trim was also featured.
The doors featured pistol grip pull-handles and luxury padded door panels with a contrasting centre trim. Courtesy/warning lights are also located in the doors.
The simulated air scoop was given an updated look with three bars added to give the illusion of air channelling to the rear brakes.
The American Racer Magnesium 5 spoke wheel rims and finned rear brake drums have been included on this model to create a true Classic “Custom”.
Ford painted all 1966 Mustang engines Blue and this, along with the single standard exhaust and detailed front suspension components, is accurately replicated.
The fuel cap with grooved edges and the words “Ford Mustang” stamped concentrically into the metal surface, along with the standard backup lights.
The differential carrier with a straddle mounted pinion and the 16 gallon fuel tank mounted beneath the luggage compartment are seen here in all their glory.
Item includes certificate with individual production number.
