In the 1967 Trans Am Season, Allan Moffat won the Non-Championship Watkins Glen Manufacturers Challenge, in the privateer Mustang, which then convinced Mercury’s boss, Fran Hernandez that he was capable against drivers such as Parnelli Jones. Moffat raced for Bud Moore Engineering who at the time ran the Mercury Race Team. The team cars were painted red and silver, but as Allan Moffat was an Australian driver, they painted his green and gold. Moffat then competed in 4 races, Mercury lost the title to a Ford Mustang with the Mercury Cougar ceasing to race, but still remaining a highly respected and loved American muscle car, now apart of Australia’s most iconic pieces in racing.
