The 1981 Bathurst 1000 was to be a tough race for Brock. After a battle for the lead in the opening stages of the race, rear axle problems reduced Brock’s race result to 21st place. It was said to be the wrong choice of tyre and rim size that overloaded the rear end causing axle damage. But in the battle during the opening stages, the 05 car received a big whack from Bartlett’s Camaro. It caused a fibreglass wheel flare to fly off Brock’s car. Although it was said that this incident was not responsible, one wonders…Even the race did not go all the distance, it was cut short due to a six-car accident on lap 121 at McPhillamy Park. Dick Johnson and John French were leading the race at the time and were declared the winners. It was also to be the last year Peter Brock would share the wheel of the “05” Commodore with Jim Richards.
