In 1973 many racing regulations were changed, one of which was the Bathurst race being increased from 500 miles to 1000 kilometres, which added an extra 33 laps. ?Peter Brock and Doug Chivas started in second position behind John Goss and Kevin Bartlett in a Ford XA Falcon GT. ?At the drop of the flag the big Falcon stormed into the lead leaving the Brock/Chivas Torana behind. ?The speed of the Falcons were impressive but their fuel consumption was greater than the little Toranas. ?The race was taking its toll on the cars with several retirements from both Holden and Ford.

The HDT pit was telling Doug Chivas, then in the lead, to stretch his fuel as far as possible so they could make it to the finish with only one more pitstop. ?This would cause the downfall of the No. 1 Torana and on top of the mountain the car spluttered and ran out of fuel. ?Chivas was able to tiptoe the dead car down the mountain and with sight of the pits attempted to clutch start the car to coax it in, but this caused the car to stop 100m from his pit. ?Chivas was forced to push the car up a rise that led to pit lane,he was not allowed any help from the pit crew; they had to be content yelling encouragement.

With metres left the officials felt pit and allowed the pit crew to push the car; the effort having taken its toll on an exhausted Chivas. ?The pit stop had cost 3 minutes and the lead to Moffat, with Bond second.

With Brock now in the car, pushing hard, both Toranas were trying to catch the Allan Moffat Falcon and were lapping two to three seconds quicker. ?Their challenge for the lead was destroyed 11 laps from the finish when both cars suffered tyre failures from picking up debris due to a rolled Mazda. ?Peter Brock was able to make it to the pits limping past Colin Bond in the process. ?After replacing both rear tyres Brock was able to rejoin the race, eventually finishing the race in second ?position, a worthy result when almost half the field failed to finish.
