Craig Lowndes and Greg Murphy had great success in 1996, and it looked to be repeated in 1997. Starting 3rd on the grid (with Brock / Skaiffe 1st) both factory Holdens got a great start. Running first and second this made an ominous sight at the head of the pac. The Mobile Holden Racing Team’s luck changed when Lowndes race ended disastrously. He hit the wall out of Castrol Curve on lap 38 while passing a backmarker. Their team mates race also ended when Skaiffe pitted on lap 52 with terminal engine problems, not the end they hoped for.
